American Racism

Michael Lumish

I don't want to get maudlin, but this is a very sad moment.

When I look at the "legacy press" it is practically all racism all the time, now.

What pisses me off more than anything else, tho, is the fact that between Martin Luther King, Jr. and Barack Obama the United States did a terrific job of moving beyond the kind of toxic racism that gave us Jim Crow and the Klan.

All that was basically dead.

Everyone knew that there were some hard-core white supremacist types still out there. When I was growing up they seemed to have congregated in the Pacific Northwest.

But we were so beyond all of this.

I gotta tell ya, I was damn proud to vote for Barack Obama in 2008.

It seemed to me, and millions of other Americans, that we were finally, seriously, moving beyond the old crusty racism of the past.

And the thing of it is, we were.

The United States, along with West, more generally, is actually the least racist part of the planet but Americans are so insulated and egotistical that they cannot see it.

The question that is foremost in my mind is the degree to which this racism was just there and to what extent was it politically constructed?

  1. I'm not sure I understand your question at the end. But I think to a great extent the "crisis" of racism has been politically/socially reconstructed.
No one doubts that racism exists, in its dictionary definition, to some extent, and is a universal human trait. But the hardcore hate and oppression asserted by SJW's is simply a political tool being used to attain political power over adversaries. And it's beyond grotesque and a real race to the bottom. It is a destabilization technique.

BTW, did you happen to see this video about Rasmieh Odeh posted at Elder's? Here it is:

  2. I would say that the racism of today is a shadow of what it was in King's day, however, that is a far cry from racism being basically dead.

A manifestation of the persistent racism is the case of Lawrence Crosby who was pulled over for driving his own car and subsequently tackled to the ground. Aside from getting out to the car without prompting, Crosby had done nothing wrong. It is the preponderance of stories such as that that lead African Americans to be cynical about the evidence that someone like Michael Brown actually was culpable for the police action resulting in his death.

  3. The left first tries to legislate then criminalize what people think and feel. And when of course that doesn't work they try to kill you. The left's definition of 'racism' includes what they imagine are your inner thoughts irrespective of your behavior. And if you don't even feel those inner thoughts you're still a racist because they will tell you you don't know you're a racist.

As an aside I suspect the police were told to lay off because it was hoped that being outnumbered 10:1 the Nazis would be massacred to the last man standing. Not that that's a terrible thing, but again, once you pitch the definition of who's entitled to exist over to some nameless faceless mob....well we've seen that before. Moreover it looks like we're heading in the direction of surrendering all of our civil rights over to private corporations like google and facebook. They decide right and wrong, they decide good and evil and they decide who has rights and who doesn't.

  4. Are the problems associated with Charlottesville really worse than the previous USA president giving $17 Billion dollars [$17,000,000,000] to a country which is the world’s largest sponsor of terrorism, to a country which is absolutely determined to wipe 100% of Israel off-the-map forever, to a country in which cries of “Death to America!” are heard 24 hours a day and 365 days a year?

Notice that I did not mention the name of that country – I don’t need to, because you know which country I am talking about.

  6. Your instincts are on target, Mike.

"Editor's Note: David Horowitz is the author of the runaway New York Times best-seller "Big Agenda: President Trump’s Plan to Save America." His book first predicted the anti-Trump left would use race to divide America and undermine the Trump presidency. His op-ed for Newsmax appears below. Get more info on "Big Agenda" — Go Here Now.

The tragedy in Charlottesville, Virginia, could have been an occasion to stop and consider how the tolerance for politically correct violence and politically correct hatred is leading the nation toward civil war.

Instead, the media and the political left have turned this incident into the biggest fake news story of the summer, transforming its real lessons into a morality play that justifies war against the political right, and against white people generally.....What "Unite the Right" actually demonstrated was that the assortment of neo-Nazis, pro-Confederates, and assorted yahoos gathered under the banner of the "Alt-Right" is actually a negligible group.

This supposed national show of strength actually attracted all of 500 people.

Compare that to the tens of the thousands who can readily be marshaled by two violent groups of the left — Black Lives Matter and Antifa — and you get an idea of how marginal "white supremacists" are to America's political and cultural life.

Yet "white supremacy" and its evils became the centerpiece of all the fake news reporting on the event, including all the ludicrous attacks on the president for not condemning enough a bogeyman the whole nation condemns, and that no one but a risible fringe supports.....What is taking place in the media accounts and political commentaries on this event is an effort by the left to turn the mayhem in Charlottesville into a template for their war against a mythical enemy — "white supremacy" — which is really a war on white people generally.

The ideology that drives the left and divides our country is "identity politics" — the idea that the world consists of two groups — "people of color" who are guiltless and oppressed, and white people who are guilty and oppressors.

This is the real race war."

I suspect the average American smells something rotten with all this BUT it is almost impossible to stay neutral in a situation involving Nazis. One wrong word, one suggestion of using critical thought and you too will be labelled a Nazi or apologist. FFS, the NYT is saying the ACLU should rethinking free speech. The game is afoot.

  7. Slavery was the norm throughout human history until the UK and USA began its extermination. The job remains.

Imagine if these few hundreds of haters had been ignored and allowed to have their day, then crawl back into their holes. That is what the First Amendment is about. How many people would have even known? Would the woman have been killed?

The greater actual danger comes from the well funded, far greater numbers on the other side. Life under them would be as bad. A glimpse of their actual intolerance is seen increasingly, from Google to the progressive, violent war against "Nazis" and "racists" and "fascists," and antipathy toward free expression.

What goes on here is political opportunism and virtue signaling. The climate created reminds of the Inquisition, and everyone knows how that turned out.

  8. I'm sure it's fine. All we need do is ethnically cleanse all the white people form California and all other 'blue' states, sanctuary cities and so forth. They're right. Let's blow up Mount Rushmore, Mount Vernon, the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial. Hell lets blow up the White House too. Let's rename Washington DC. It's really not that hard - South Africa renamed every state and virtually every city; it should only take a generation for the living memory of those old racist place names to fade out. Let's redo our money and take all those racist faces off the paper money and coins. It's an opportunity to finally update our currency so that paper money could accommodate blind people. Why should we even care. Just erase everything. In a decade or two when people are still screaming and setting fires, we can say "about what?"

  9. I would agree with you on Martin Luther King, but I don't on Barack Obama. I think that because we elected Obama in 2008, we eventually got Trump in 2016--because the people had to have a change, regardless of whether the change would be good for the country.

Do you really think that Martin Luther King would have approved of what has happened over the years? Are we closer to his dream because Obama was elected? I think we can agree to disagree whether electing Obama was good for America.

  10. Racism in America is a bit like Walking Dead or Game of Thrones: more people talk about it and have strongly held opinions than have actually seen it.

  11. So here we are 72 years after the Holocaust and no one really worries or cares about the Holocaust while it's 152 since the end of slavery and that's the ONLY issue that people want to worry about, including almost all American Jews. Far more Jews in America is confronted with antisemitism than Blacks experience slavery in America today.

  12. Be that as it may, we can keep two topics in our minds at once. I don't think we have to denigrate the experience of blacks in America in order to fight anti-Semitism.
