AFP - Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal said on Wednesday that Israel had "failed in all its goals" after a Gaza truce deal came into effect, while thanking Egypt and Iran for their support during the conflict.
"After eight days, God stayed their hand from the people of Gaza, and they were compelled to submit to the conditions of the resistance," Meshaal said.
"Israel has failed in all its goals," he told reporters in a Cairo hotel.
Meshaal also thanked ceasefire mediator Egypt, as well as Iran, which he said "had a role in arming" his Islamist movement during the conflict.
"I would like to thank our dear Egypt, aided by the brave elected President Mohamed Morsi... Egypt acted responsibly and understood the demands of the resistance and the Palestinian people," he said.
Meshaal also praised Iran, despite "disagreements on the situation in Syria".
And the Hamas leader warned Israel against violating the agreement.
"If you commit, we will commit. If you do not commit, the rifles are in our hands," he said.
Earlier, Egypt announced the ceasefire agreement would come into effect at 1900 GMT on the eighth day of Gaza-linked violence that has killed at least 155 Palestinians and five Israelis."

DeleteSome of you may have got the impression that I'm none too happy with this ceasefire. You would be right. But, I'm happy that no more people will die (hopefully) in the next little while. I have read Rubin's latest piece and it has mellowed me a bit. I will read it again and see what happens. I suggest you all read it. I trust this guy more so than most pundits.

Y'know, it's often said that Jewish-Islamic relations were for many, many years, centuries, perhaps, peaceful and cooperative.
And, y'know, that's true. The system of dhimmitude was varied, right? In some times and places the Jews didn't necessarily have it that bad.
But this was the peace of Jewish submission to Muslim imperialism. This was a peace that came with accepting a form of slavery.
What they want is not justice, as we understand that word in the west, what they want is eventual victory and they believe that they can have it, which is why they are willing to fight on and on and on.
In the mean time their western allies sell their arguments to regular people in the language of human rights.
I wonder if the "ceasefire" will make through the cranberry sauce??

The declaration also says no court can dissolve the constituent assembly, which is drawing up a new constitution.
President Mursi also sacked the chief prosecutor and ordered the retrial of people accused of attacking protesters when ex-President Mubarak held office.
Egyptian opposition leader Mohammed ElBaradei accused Mr Mursi of acting like a "new pharaoh".
