The reason behind the urgency of the US president's trip to Israel in spring - a time flagged by Netanyahu as significant in the Iranian nuclear program - is to tell him to leave the matter to the US, officials tell Army Radio. If this story is true it means that the Obama administration has been lying to us all along and has no real intention of preventing Iranian nukes.
The main purpose of US President Barack Obama's visit to Israel in the spring is to warn Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu against attacking Iran, unnamed officials told Army Radio on Sunday.
According to the officials, the urgency of the trip is because in his speech to the United Nations in September, Netanyahu had flagged the spring of 2013 as a significant time in the context of the Iranian nuclear threat.
My bet is that the story is, in fact, true, but we shall see.
It has to be Iran.
ReplyDeleteWhat else is there to talk about?
Certainly not the peace process.
Chutzpah !! If true
ReplyDeleteObama lives in his own bubble. He seeks no counsel and listens to little if anything that anyone has to say. His cabinet positions are mouthpieces and who he actually listens to are his 'personal advisers' like Jarrett and Axelrod who never are required to meet the standard of Senate approval. Coupled with this is the fact that Obama like EVERY OTHER second term president believes that by his sheer force of will and good feelings, can 'fix' the Mideast and thereby secure his posterity. They've all tried and failed because they all try the same thing; lean on the Jews, get the Jews to cave and then magically the Arabs will prostrate themselves at the feet of the Great American Caesar-Christ-Buddha.
ReplyDeleteOf course this is insane foolishness but they all do it because second term Presidents only have about 20 months before they're in a terminal glide path that starts shortly before the next mid term elections. After that, it's Presidential Libraries, Medals of Freedom for 80 year old ex actors and all that. And make no mistake, while Obama will be the first billionaire ex President it won't come w/o a lot work he'll have to do laying the groundwork now. He will be very busy on that.
But Israel? It's an afterthought. By the middle of this term he'll have given up because he can't end his term on that sour note so it has to be forgotten long before the end.

You make good and interesting points and I suppose one question to ask is just how much damage this guy can likely do before the mid-terms?
There is no question in my mind that he's done significant damage in the last four years to American interests to Jewish interests and to Israeli interests. Some of this damage will have long term effects because he has signaled American disdain to the Jewish state and that will increase ugly chatter, and thus ugly behavior, on all sorts of levels and in all sorts of places for many years to come.
This is to say that part of what Obama has accomplished is the mainstreaming in the west of contempt for Israel and therefore, in some measure, to Jews as a whole.
There are two main areas where Obama is capable of significantly more damage. The first is Iran and the second is the "peace process."
There is nothing in Obama's record to suggest that he honestly intends to prevent Iran from gaining nuclear weaponry. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. What we do know is that he has sought to prevent Israel from defending the Jewish people from the theocratic fascists in Hamas and he has sought to prevent Israel from defending the Jewish people from the theocratic fascists in Iran. That much we know for certain.
As for the "peace process," at this point it is little more than a ploy in the delegitimization game. What I suspect that we will see going forward is Obama and Kerry demanding that Jews stop placing floorboards in Jewish homes on Jewish land and Netanyahu will partially comply as he maintains his tight-rope act.
The Arabs will insist that partial Jewish compliance is unacceptable and will blame Israel for the fact that they, themselves, refuse to actually negotiate an end of hostilities. (Either that or they will make a small show of negotiating before running for the hills in the manner of Arafat.)
In either case, the EU and the American president and much of the Democratic party and, of course, the UN, along with all the Muslim countries, will blame Israel for the fact that Hamas racists want to see Jews dead and this will lead to further European pressure and perhaps, even, the break BDS is looking for.
I cannot see into the future and I very much hope that I am wrong, but we shall see.
