Should Israel Take Out Hamas?

Mike L.

The snippet that I respond to below was written by Jerusalem Post staff:
Israel should seriously consider the reoccupation of the Gaza Strip in response to Palestinian rocket fire on the western Negev, former foreign minister Avigdor Liberman told Israel Radio on Monday.

Liberman, who currently heads the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, said that if Israel were to allow the status quo to persist, Hamas would amass a fleet of aircraft and missiles that would threaten populous coastal towns like Tel Aviv and Netanya.

"Hamas has no intention of reconciling with a Jewish presence in Israel," the chairman of the Yisrael Beytenu party said. "So we need to return to the Gaza Strip and conduct a thorough cleaning."

When asked if his position was supported by the prime minister and defense minister, Liberman said he did not know.
It is exceedingly late as I write this, so I intend to keep my comments brief.

Hamas has got to go.

Hamas does not just call for the elimination of Israel as a Jewish State, but calls for the genocide of the Jews quite specifically in its charter.

This makes them something akin to Nazis - who we know they have an historical connection to - and this means that they lose their right to exist as an organized group.

I do not know that Israel should take the hideous Gaza Strip, but there is no question in my mind that Hamas needs to be dismantled.

This organization is no better than the Ku Klux Klan and absolutely must go - by any means necessary.

  1. A fundamental problem with Iron Dome is that its purely defensive. Pure defense doesn't offer any strategic advantage. It should be modified or enhanced to instantly fire a second missile at the incoming rocket's launch site if Iron Dome evaluates the rocket and decides to shoot it down. Wherever that launch site is; a field, a building, a TV station, a hospital or school, wherever.

  2. Yeah, Hamas should be taken out on "merit" alone, but I don't see how much it would change things. Apart from being a deterrent that would give Israel an extended (but necessarily limited) period of calm, not much would be different.

If it's not Hamas then it's the Party of Islamic Jihad or even Al Qaeda. Apropos of Al Qaeda, a focus on Hamas as the source of terrorism would be as misguided as the American focus on Al Qaeda. I believe Hamas are just representatives and executors of the public will; terrorism against the Jews in the Land of Israel has been going on for over a century because the people on the other side want it. In other words, the narrative of peace-loving people on the other side who want their darnedest to make peace with the Zionists but are prevented from doing so by big, bad Hamas is false; Hamas is in power because the people in Gaza want the Jews killed.

Israel could reoccupy the Gaza Strip, but that would bring us back to the problems inherent in being an occupying force. I think you'll find very few Israeli Jews who are pro-occupation; Left and Right in Israel are agreed that sending soldiers to maintain an occupation over another nation is wrong on so many levels, disagreeing only on how the occupation is to be ended.

The solution, I believe, is the one that right now hasn't a snowball's chance in hell of being carried out.

  3. Gaza gets, what? 80-85% of their electricity from Israel and they're no longer paying their bills? Cut them off. Or tell the EU to pay the bills directly and increase the rates by enough to make up for the rolling blackouts the IEC expects to have this summer.
