  1. Ready for my three day weekend.

Tomorrow will be a day of haircuts, and a long overdue visit to 2nd Street Brew House in Pennsport. I haven't been down that way since moving back east from Oregon two years ago and spending a marvelous, wonder-filled day at the PennDOT Driver License Center. ;)

I would also like to see if I can pack in lunch at this little Dominican spot on the other side of Kensington I've been meaning to hit forever now, as well as a trip down the Italian Market area (which is largely Mexican and Vietnamese these days) for tacos and pho.

Continuing a tradition, NMAJH will be offering free admission on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

I haven't been there in a while, but I will definitely(!) be there for the upcoming Chasing Dreams: Baseball and Becoming American exhibit, opening March 13...

"Baseball was a kind of secular church that reached into every class and region of the nation and bound millions upon millions of us together….Baseball made me understand what patriotism was about, at its best.

-- Philip Roth, “My Baseball Years,” New York Times, Opening Day, April 2, 1973

March 13, 2014 the Museum will invite fans and families to engage in baseball’s enduring legacy through the pioneering exhibition, Chasing Dreams: Baseball and Becoming American. Chasing Dreams will be the first large-scale exhibition to weave together the history of American sport, leisure, and national identity with the story of Jewish immigration and integration into American life. Baseball’s legends and myths, heroes and flops, its struggles and its moments of triumph tell our national story. And for immigrants to America—be they Jews, Italians, Dominicans, or Japanese—baseball has long served as a path to learning and understanding American values.

Chasing Dreams will run through October 2014 in Philadelphia and then begin a national tour.

    1. Thanks, Doodad, I sure am!

Hair has been cut (my old Italian guy has retired, and my new spot is actually a Turkish Muslim shop nearby, which combined with the Palestinian falafel shop and Egyptian shwarma market I also regularly patronize, makes it so that I actually support more locally-owned and operated Muslim and Arab businesses here in North Philadelphia in a week than most BDS-supporting Jew-haters even see in a lifetime, but I suppose that's neither here nor there...), and I am currently enjoying a Susquehanna Toboggan doppelbock.

I wish everybody else a happy weekend, as well!

  3. Btw, I've just learned that a former coworker of mine has married his longtime boyfriend, and they have bought a home together in Roselle, New Jersey.

    Good on them!

I eagerly await Daily Kos-style, America-hating 'progressives' to tell us why Russia and Iran are better than us.

In two years, I predict two things -

    1) Pennsylvanians will all be able to claim the same government benefits, no matter who they go to bed with

    2) I will be able to obtain a concealed carry permit in Philadelphia

Well okay, 1 will become true much earlier than 2 will, but still. I approve!

My uncle in New Jersey can marry his boyfriend. So can my cousin. None face being hung from cranes, or are told by government officials to leave kids alone.

Pardon me while I chant USA, USA... ;)
