All the Mensches need to do is beat undefeated Japan in the Tokyo Dome tonight.

    1. It was scheduled for 6AM here. I don't know who won. Don't tell me. ESPN is showing the game again right now, at 10:AM EDT. Are you an early riser or an easy rider? :0)

    2. It's not looking good. Japan up 5-0 in the 7th. Time to put on the rally caps.

    3. Final 8-3. Israel scored 3 in the ninth.

  3. I still resent Ha'aretz for seeking to throw cold water on this. What the fuck is wrong with those people?

    1. Still haven't read the Ha'aretz stuff. I was medically unavailable for a few days.
Why don't you write them a letter, or, write a column about them and your thoughts on the zeitgeist which animates them?

    2. What is wrong with Haaretz? Geeze Mike, ya got a few days? This could take a while.

  5. Should the title be "Ha'aretz Spits on Team Israel" or "Ha'aretz Spits on the Mensches"?

The former does a better job of conveying the story line to people who have no idea about the Mensches, while the latter title is more evocative.

    It's a tough choice, really.

Ha'aretz' attitude is summed-up nicely by this quote from Simon Spungin, who writes, "Sure, they're Jewish and, by Israeli law, they could become Israeli if they wanted to. But they're not. They are Americans and they have been brought in as ringers, plain and simple."

This in an article under the condescending title of At World Baseball Classic, I'm Rooting for 'Team Nice Jewish Boys'

I'd love to see this putz say that to outfielder Cody Decker's face.

    1. I'd go with "Ha'aretz Spits on the Mensches." It's easy to explain about Team Israel in your first paragraph.
BTW, Israel is a name for the Jewish People collectively.

  6. The Japanese are almost as fanatical about baseball as Dominicans. And to their credit, Japanese pro ball is played with a slightly smaller ball. So they have to make an adjustment for a 'standard ball'. Also Japanball can end in a tie. Also the strike zone isn't standardized.

They also burn their pitchers out hardcore. Not uncommon to throw 300 pitches on game day including bullpen work. These guys are warriors.

    1. Holy shit! 300 pitches? Well, there must be a lot of ex-Japanese ballplayers out there with absolutely wrecked arms. These guys should have taken a page from Sandy Koufax's book. I didn't actually see the Mensches v. Japan, but I must have on DVR.

And no standard strike zone? Huh. That sounds dumb.

Oh, and as an aside, you called each of those examples of modern Arabic architecture that I put up a few Fridays back.

If there is one thing that I want to give that culture great credit for its their architecture.

      Without question, to my mind.
