A Rabbi Shot Dead

Michael Lumish

Rabbi Shevach in a recent photo with his family.
On Tuesday, January 9, Rabbi Raziel Shevach (35) was shot dead near his home in Havat Gilad, Israel.

Jeremy Sharon, writing for the Jerusalem Post, tells us:
A resident of the Havat Gilad outpost in central Samaria was killed on Tuesday night close to his home, in a drive-by shooting attack on Route 60.

Rabbi Raziel Shevach, 35, a mohel, was married with six children, four daughters and two sons, ages 11 to eight months.

Shortly after 8 p.m., Magen David Adom received a report of the shooting and dispatched paramedics and an MDA team to the site of the attack. The victim had several wounds to his neck and upper body from a reported spray of 22 bullets, and was taken to Meir Medical Center in Kfar Saba.
22 bullets.

An Israeli Jewish acquaintance in response to this recent attack has some ideas on "What is going to happen" and "What would happen if I were Prime Minister with a cooperative cabinet."

What is going to happen, he writes:
1.) The killer(s) will be found and tried for murder or will die in a blaze of glory firefight with the authorities.

2.) They will become overnight heroes in Palestinian society. Streets and parks will be named after them. Kids will trade cards with their pictures on them.

3.) The killers and their families will receive a lifelong stipend from the Palestinian Authority.

4.) The killers will be traded in another prisoner swap 10 years down the road.

5.) Rinse, wash, repeat.
The writer is likely correct.

If the killer(s) are found - which is possible by the time that you read this  -  they will become heroes throughout much of Palestinian-Arab territories. The veneration of Jew murderers, after all, is a very old story within Arab culture on Jewish land.

Their families will receive a generous stipend, courtesy of the United States government and the EU and the UN via Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Authority, and Jewish citizens of western countries must wonder how it is that their own governments are financing the murder of our brothers and sisters in the Middle East.

That is, Jewish people must wonder how it is that our own tax dollars go toward the murder of our own people by our own governments within our own ancestral homeland.

And it is also a not unreasonable wager that sometime in the future - much like Reem Assil's friend Rasmea Odeh - the killer(s) will be freed by the Israeli government in exchange for a single Israeli Jew.

What I think is that Jewish people, particularly those of the Israeli persuasion, have about had it.

What would happen if I were Prime Minister with a cooperative cabinet.
1.) Any and all domestic and foreign media will be banned from Judea and Samaria.

2.) When the perpetrators are found they will be summarily executed on the spot in front of their families.

3.) Their remains will be buried in unmarked graves and their names will never be reported. They will not be heroes. Threaten the families that if they ever speak to anyone about their identities that they'll be next.

4.) Go through the village the perpetrators are from and in every house you find a Hamas flag, an ISIS flag, Jihadist literature, or a weapon, shoot the oldest male member of the household.

5.) Deport the survivors to Gaza with whatever they can carry.

6.) Burn the village to the ground and on top of the ashes build a new Jewish settlement called Har Raziel in honor of the murdered.

7.) Make this the official government response to any terror incident going forward.

8.) Watch peace break out quickly.
Damn, that sounds harsh.

I would recommend no such thing, but I am a diaspora Jew living a not-uncomfortable life in the American Pacific Northwest.

The notion of burning villages to the ground or shooting terrorists in front of their families without due process of law is savage to my ears.

The reason that I am pointing to this, however, is not a matter of advocacy. I am not recommending anything written in the blockquote above.

I am, however, beginning to suspect that Israeli Jews - if not Jews, in general - are becoming increasingly tired of simply accepting their lot in life as targets of genocide.

Thus, the Day of the Dhimmi is Done.

The Jewish people have a dual reputation. Sometimes, particularly in diaspora, we are thought of as wimps. Sometimes, particularly in Israel, we are thought of as vicious brutes.

What I would suggest to our neighbors of European and Arab descent - who are sitting with their bowls of popcorn watching the drama play itself out - is that despite two-thousand years of getting our asses kicked even the Jewish people have limited patience.

The blockquote above reflects that.

  1. There were cries of revenge at the funeral. Not surprised. Course. Israelis are "civilized," so revenge will be sorely punished. A few days later they announce an increase of 7500 work permits for Palestinians. Duh.

    1. Well, as they say, my dear Doodad, cooler heads will prevail.

For the moment, at least, my head is not so cool.

      {In fact, I am damn pissed off.}

  3. Only 35 years old. Tragic. And inexcusable.

  4. Ya know, I am not a particularly religious guy.

My general stance on religion is that I am content to know what I do not know.

But when I look at that guy's face - the shining quality of it - it makes me realize that there is even more that I do not know that I sometimes think.

    1. If you started studying the Talmud today, it would take you ten years to learn all of it. Other important Jewish books that should be learned by all Jew include: the Jewish Bible with classic commentaries [called Mikraot Gedolot], various collections of Midrash [semi-sacred Jewish stories] various classic books about practical law [Halachah], and the writings of the Gaonim, Rishonim and Acharinim [major post-Talmudic scholars], etc.

My favorite books to explain Judaism are THE HANDBOOK OF JEWISH THOUGHT by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan and the other writings of Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, an Orthodox Rabbi and scientist whose name was listed in THE WHOSE WHO OF AMERICAN PHYSICS.

    2. Mr. Cohen, I will check some of those books out. Kaplan does sound interesting. And, y'know, as I write this I am looking at a book that my wife gave me awhile back entitled Everyman's Talmud: The Major Teachings of the Rabbinic Sages by Abraham Cohen.

This may be a very basic notion, but am I wrong in thinking that Judaism is fundamentally a religion of ethics and law, Christianity is fundamentally a religion of compassion, and Islam is fundamentally a religion of submission?

This is my broad, overall sense of the Big 3 of the Levant.

    3. Check this out. For anyone with an elementary knowledge of the subject matter, it is quite helpful to understanding.

    4. With all due respect for Yale University, the correct way to learn Torah is from Orthodox Rabbis, who actually believe in Torah, and practice it.

Learning Torah from Gentiles or atheistic Jews is a big mistake. Most college professors are extremely Leftist, and teach Judaism from a hostile viewpoint.

Last-but-not-least, the Jewish Bible is NOT the "Old" Testament -- it is the ONLY Testament!

    5. Have you have watched the videos referenced? If not, to make assumptions and draw conclusions about things you don't know is poor form.

Introduction to the Hebrew Bible is not intended and does not profess to be "the correct way to learn Torah." It was not taught from a hostile viewpoint, either. Perhaps you would do better not to mischaracterize.

The course is an excellent way for one to get a sense of how the Jewish people developed and adopted their laws and culture. It is quite helpful for secular Jews who are not steeped in that knowledge, even if it does not meet your approval.

Finally, although the Hebrew Bible (there were no "Jews" when most of it was written) is the "only" testament on one level, history dictates that it be distinguished from what followed. Nitpicking serves what purpose?

Security forces on Wednesday evening captured the terrorists who carried out the shooting attack near Havat Gilad last week, in which Rabbi Raziel Shevach was murdered.

The forces from the Yamam counter-terrorism unit located the terrorists' hiding place in Jenin, and a gunfight broke out between the forces and the terrorists.

One of the terrorists was eliminated and the second was arrested. According to Palestinian Arab reports, security forces are surrounding a home in which a third terrorist is hiding.

The police said that there several people were wounded in the incident, but no further details can be provided at this time due to the limitations of the military censor.

  7. Judaism certainly does include ethics and law, but other equally important elements include: compassion, charity, self-restraint, self-improvement, fear of G_d, awe of G_d, love of G_d, loving Jews, prayer, studying Torah, faith and trust in G_d, happiness, self-sacrifice, the Land of Israel, mysticism and prophecy. It is complicated.

History shows that over the past 2,500 years, every Jewish community that abandoned Shabbat observance eventually assimilated and intermarried and vanished; and the same thing is true of every Jewish community that stopped eating kosher.

    My response to OldSchoolTwentySix:

The Jewish Bible [known as Tanach in Hebrew, or the O.T. (Only Testament) in English] mentions the importance of eating KOSHER 4 times, the importance of observing SHABBAT 18 times and condemns intermarriage with non-Jews 13 times.

The Bible mentions the importance of eating kosher in: Daniel chapter 1, Ezekiel chapter 4 and Isaiah chapter 66.

Daniel would not eat the food from the King, even though he probably could have eaten it for FREE, and even though it was probably tastier and more expensive than what he normally ate -- because the King’s food was NOT kosher. (Bible, Book of Daniel, chapter 1)

In the Biblical Book of Joshua, chapter 23, verses 12 to 13, G_d reveals that:

If Jews intermarry with non-Jews, then He will NOT help the Jews conquer the Land of Israel. And even worse, the sin of intermarriage will cause the Jews to be driven out from the Land of Israel.

The Biblical Book of Jeremiah, end of chapter 17, teaches:

If the Jewish people observe Shabbat [the Jewish Sabbath] then Jerusalem will be ruled by Jews forever (verses 24 to 25).

But if Jews DO NOT observe Shabbat, then the Land of Israel [literally, Jerusalem] will burn with fire (verse 27, last verse of chapter).

What I just said should be saved to your Personal Computer for future reference, because you will not often encounter Jews like me who can prove important points quickly and concisely; I am sorry if that sounds a little arrogant, but it is true.

    1. Did not ask for that. The question asked for your opinion, not what the Bible says. The question did not concern the Jewish people or Jerusalem.

Once again, do you believe one must be orthodox and follow Jewish law in all respects to be considered not only Jewish, but a good Jew?

Also, do you think Jews that died in the Holocaust were mostly secular or observant, and if the latter, how did they violate the covenants so that millions of them were exterminated?
