Perhaps best to leave the moral lectures to Mayor Pete. The fact is that we do take care of the stranger, even if not perfectly. Put aside political bias, and stop using tragedy to promote a political agenda. That would be nice.
Another inconvenient fact is that too many of today's critics, if the stranger was a deplorable, would not offer care, but hatred. Migrants are tools to exploit, despite that they pretend otherwise.
So your answer is, "Screw 'em, they hate us." Maybe that would work, but I just don't think so.
