Beneath the Helmet

Michael L.

Beneath the Helmet: From High School to the Home Front is a movie currently in production by Raphael Shore, Executive Director, in Israel.

I recently received this note from Raphael:
Hi,

I am excited to announce Jerusalem U’s forthcoming film Beneath the Helmet: From High School to the Home Front, which tells the personal stories of five young Israeli women and men who put their lives on the line to protect their families and defend their homeland.

Click here to learn more about the making of the film and to be a part of this exciting project. You can also see the amazing perks we are offering to all those who help make this film a reality.
What I recommend, however, is that you guys also check out the trailer which is very nicely produced, exceedingly interesting, and about five minutes long.

They are looking for donations, so those of you with pockets might consider helping out.

Give it a gander.

Matt and Zach Are Cooling It

Michael L.

It is with some regret that I must announce that Matt and Zach of Huffington Post Monitor fame are moving on.

As Matt posted:
Our decision comes from a combination of other activities in our lives interesting us more, and the changes in the Huffington Post itself. Since the creation of the Huffington Post's new comment policy, the number of comments have gone way down in articles in general and especially Israel related ones. An Israel related article that once generated a hundred angry comments now results in five or six. On top of that, at least in the few past months, the Huffington Post has removed its laser focus on Israel that it's had for the past four years in favor of more "gotcha" type headlines about foreign celebrities and bloody shirt photos.
This does not mean that Matt and Zach will no longer be heard from, however.  It simply means that due to changes in their own lives, as well as changes with the Huffington Post, itself, that we will see something less of them.

I would still very much recommend that you guys drop into the Huff Post Monitor because the brothers have done an excellent job of analysis in the past and therefore we can expect them to continue to do so in the future, if perhaps on a more limited basis.

I suppose what I would like to see from these gentlemen, as they are backing off of Huff Post coverage in order to pursue other activities, is more general analysis of the Arab-Israel conflict.  They certainly know their material and are obviously not afraid to stand up and fight.

This is just a quick thanks for a thankless job well done.

A Big Tip 'O the Kippa to Matt and Zach.

Thanks for the memories, boys.

Anti-Zionist Event At SFSU Tomorrow

Michael L.

Tammi Benjamin of the AMCHA Institute sent me the following message this afternoon concerning tomorrow's anti-Zionist anti-Semitic hate-fest at San Francisco State University, which I wrote a bit about here.
Subject: Antisemitic Event At SFSU Tomorrow — Simon Wiesenthal Center, Scholars for Peace in the Middle East, StandWithUs, ZOA West and AMCHA Initiative Highly Concerned

Dear President Wong and CSU Board of Trustees,

We write to you as representatives of organizations concerned about the safety and well-being of Jewish students on California State University campuses.

This Thursday (3/6), the SFSU College of Ethnic Studies is hosting a deeply troubling event. Advertised as a "Report and Discussion From Members of the North American Based Academic and Labor Delegation to Palestine 2014," the event is slated to feature presentations from four members of a 7-person delegation to "the West Bank" and "the 1948 areas of Palestine" (i.e. Israel), a trip which was organized by Professor Rabab Abdulhadi, director of the Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas Initiative (AMED) and faculty advisor to the General Union of Palestine Students (GUPS).

The event announcement posted on the website of the College of Ethnic Studies indicates that the delegation's participants, consisting of Professor Abdulhadi, SFSU American Indian Studies Professor Joanne Barker and 5 other academics and activists who are leading advocates for the academic boycott of Israel, went to the region in order to "build working relationships and solidarities with Palestinian scholars, artists, and activists consistent with their 2005 call for “a campaign of boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel." The purpose of Thursday's event is also clearly stated in the announcement: to promote "resolute actions in support of the academic and cultural boycott of Israel."

What is not mentioned in the announcement, but is clear from Professor Barker's detailed description of the delegation's trip on her blog, is that both the North American delegates and the Palestinians with whom they met view the boycott of Israel as a means for weakening and dismantling the "racist," "apartheid," "colonial" Jewish state. In addition, some of the Palestinians with whom the group met argued for the use of armed violence against the Jewish state, and at least two of the meetings were with individuals affiliated with US State Department-designated terrorist organizations responsible for the murder of numerous Jews worldwide. For example:

The group's first meeting was in Jordan with Leila Khaled, a convicted hijacker and the most famous member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a terrorist organization responsible for 159 terrorist acts such as bombings, armed assault and assassinations, resulting in numerous injuries and deaths including those of more than 20 US citizens. As a result of her terrorist activities, Khaled has been refused entry to Israel, Britain, and Canada. Khaled still advocates armed struggle as "the shortest way towards the liberation of Palestine."

The group also met with Sheikh Raed Salah, leader of the northern branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel, who was convicted of funding Hamas, a terrorist organization whose charter calls for the destruction of Israel and the murder of Jews, and he served a two-year prison sentence 2003 - 2005. In 2008, Salah was charged by an Israeli court with incitement to violence and racism, over a speech he gave in which he accused Jews of using children's blood to bake bread. In 2010, Salah was also arrested for his participation on the Mavi Marmara, a boat that was part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla funded by the International Humanitarian Relief Foundation (IHH), a known radical Islamic and anti-Western Turkish organization which, in addition to humanitarian efforts, provides support and funding to global jihad networks.

In light of the recent controversy regarding a GUPS event which featured an image of Leila Khaled holding a rifle and another with the words "My Heros Have Always Killed Colonizers," as well as the revelation of dozens of social media postings of former GUPS president Mohammad G. Hammad in which he expressed violence towards Jews and glorified the PFLP, we firmly believe that a university-sponsored event which explicitly promotes the boycott and dismantling of the Jewish state and condones terrorism cannot help but contribute to a hostile environment for Jewish students at SFSU.

President Wong, we urge you to speak out forcefully against this event, to monitor it carefully for antisemitic and anti-Israel animus and possible violation of university policy and the law (if it is permitted to go forward), and to provide counter-programming on the antisemitic nature of such BDS activities.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama Has Learned Nothing

Michael L.

suckers1.jpg - image uploaded to Picamatic He is making the same mistakes, viz-a-viz the Arab-Israel conflict, now as he made in the beginning of his first term, which leads one to wonder whether we are dealing with presidential malice or stupidity?  Then, as now, he is making an issue of the fact that Jews build housing for themselves within existing Jewish communities in Judaea and Samaria.

Jeffrey Tobin, writing in Commentary, says the following:
Kerry’s current objective is to get both parties to agree to a framework for continued talks. As has been widely reported, Netanyahu has already signaled his consent to the framework even though he and his Cabinet have grave misgivings about where the talks may eventually lead. By contrast, the Palestinians have repeatedly and publicly rejected the framework. The Palestinians have angrily rejected the framework’s requirement that they recognize Israel as a Jewish state, which is to say they agree to end the conflict rather than merely pause it. They also reject the West Bank security guarantees included in the framework even though it also contains their basic demands about a Palestinian state whose borders will be based on the 1967 borders while leaving open the possibility of territorial swaps. In other words, the Israelis have already given Kerry what he wanted while the Palestinians have done the opposite.
This is a major part of the story of the long Arab war against the Jews.

Consistently, decade upon decade, Israel has agreed to another Arab state within the traditional Jewish heartland only to be told "no" by the very Arabs who claim that they want such a state. Then the international community pressures Israel to make concessions and to agree to what it has always agreed to since the Peel Commission of 1937.

The great majority of Jews in the Middle East have always accepted the notion of yet another Arab state.  The Arabs of Judaea and Samaria refuse to accept such a state and then people like Barack Obama tell the world it is because Jews are building housing for themselves in Judaea.

It's a suckers game, and Jews who think that Obama is having a positive influence or who think that what the local Arabs really want is a state for themselves in peace next to Israel, are the ultimate suckers.

There are currently twenty one Arab states in the world.  They are Egypt, Algeria, Iraq, Sudan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Syria, Tunisia, Somalia, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Libya, Lebanon, Oman, Kuwait, Mauritania, Qatar, Bahrain, Djibouti, and Comoros.

The Arabs, following the example of their warlord prophet, conquered the entire Middle East and hold over 99 percent of that landmass today.

So, clearly, we need another Arab state at the expense of the tiny, lone, sole, Jewish state, which represents the only part of the Middle East which the Arabs failed, ultimately, to conquer and hold.

Obama, it must also be stressed, is leading current trends in the delegitimization campaign against the Jewish people.  In his recent interview with Jeffrey Goldberg, he said the following
Israel doubled West Bank Settlement Construction in 2013...
As the FresnoZionist points out:
President Obama and most of the journalists who use the expression “settlement construction” are native English speakers. Yet they persist in using this misleading expression, which anyone who didn’t know differently would think means “building (new) settlements.” But in fact, the construction they are referring to is construction of houses and apartments within the boundaries of existing communities. The truth is that there have been virtually no new settlements established since the 1990s, except for unauthorized outposts which the government often demolishes by force.
Precisely.

When president Barack Obama complains about "settlement construction" he gives people the impression that Israel is - heavens to mergatroid! - building new townships on historically Jewish land.  It is not.  The Jews certainly have every right to, because that small bit of land is the historical homeland of the Jewish people, but the state wants to "make nice" with the west and therefore comply with Obama's racist demand that Jews not build townships for themselves or their children on the very land that Jews come from.

The effect of this today, just as in Obama's first term, is to suggest to Mahmoud Abbas that Obama has his back in the ongoing rejection of both Israel and "Palestine" by the Arab world.

Either Barack Obama knows what he is doing, in which case he is malicious, or he does not know what he is doing, in which case he is dumb.  I have to say, while I do not believe that Obama is nearly as intelligent as his sycophants tell us he is, he is certainly not dumb.  Stupid people may, perhaps, get to be president of the United States, but I do not believe that they ever get to be the president of the Harvard Law Review.

In any case, the "non-peace process" is rolling out more or less as predicted.

This is what we are looking at:

1) The US and the EU demand negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

2) The parties agree to talk and then the PA, the US, and the EU demand various concessions from Israel for the great privilege of sitting down with the PA's foremost undertaker.

3) Israel fails to meet all the concessions, thus causing the PA to flee negotiations, which they never had any intention of concluding to begin with.

4) The PA and the EU and the Obama administration place the blame for failure at Jewish feet.

5) The EU and various European countries announce additional sanctions, thereby essentially joining the anti-Semitic anti-Zionist BDS movement.

6) Arabs seek to murder Jews.

{Keep up the great work, guys.}

Tobin concludes:
Though the president warned Netanyahu that he wouldn’t be able to protect Israel if peace talks falter, his interview with Goldberg guaranteed that this is exactly what will happen. From here on in, everything else he says about the topic is moot.
Indeed.

How the Hatred Spreads

Michael L.

{Cross-posted at Jews Down Under.}

My alma mater, San Francisco State University, has emerged as among the most violently anti-Jewish universities in the United States.

Hammad.jpg - Picamatic - upload your images

Dusty, over at Pro-Israel Bay Bloggers and San Francisco State Unbecoming, alerts us to the fact that SFSU not only sponsors student organizations that call for the murder of Jews, but is now hosting a panel discussion that seeks to undermine the well-being of the Jewish State of Israel and thus undermine the well-being of the besieged Jewish minority in the Middle East.

On Thursday, March 6, between 4 PM and 7 PM, a number of anti-Jewish activists, including SFSU professor, Rabab Abdulhadi, are meeting to spread hatred.  If you would like to attend simply drop by the Ethnic Studies and Psychology building, room 116, between those hours.

This is their description of the event:
During January 2014, a delegation of six academics and one labor rights activist based in the U.S. and Canada went to the West Bank and the 1948 areas of Palestine. Each delegate came to bear witness to the political and economic realities confronting Palestinians as a result of Israel’s occupation of their homeland and to build working relationships and solidarities with Palestinian scholars, artists, and activists consistent with their 2005 call for “a campaign of boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel until it complies with international law and Palestinian rights” (BDSmovement.net). Several of the delegates are members of the Asian American Studies Association, the American Studies Association, and the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association and were active in securing their association’s resolutions in support of the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (ACBI).Repeatedly, delegates experienced and witnessed the realities of Israeli apartheid, racial discrimination, ethnic cleansing, and undermining of Palestinian rights. This report will provide a brief reflection on those experiences and a public reaffirmation of our support for resolute actions in support of the academic and cultural boycott of Israel.
I want to take this bit by bit because I find it fascinating.
During January 2014, a delegation of six academics and one labor rights activist based in the U.S. and Canada went to the West Bank and the 1948 areas of Palestine...
The "West Bank," of course, refers to heart of the Jewish homeland, Judea and Samaria, the place where Jews originated over 3,500 years ago.  The term, itself, was introduced by the Jordanians after the '48 war in order to rob Jewish people of Jewish heritage and Jewish land.

Its continued use today serves the same purpose.

Judea and Samaria have been referred to as "Judea" and "Samaria" for millenia.  If you wish to use the term "West Bank" then you must recognize that you are using anti-Jewish terminology that was designed to erase Jewish history.

As for "1948 areas of Palestine," the phrase has no meaning whatsoever.  The only people who have ever had national sovereignty on that bit of land are the Jewish people and we did so thousands of years before Arab colonizers conquered our land, Eretz Israel.
Each delegate came to bear witness to the political and economic realities confronting Palestinians as a result of Israel’s occupation of their homeland...
It must be recognized, as a matter of social justice and human rights, that the tiny bit of land referred to, no bigger than the American state of New Jersey, is the traditional homeland of the Jewish people.

The homeland of the Arab peoples is the Arabian Peninsula.

Israel is the homeland of the Jews.

The Arab-Muslims invaded the Middle East directly after the death of Muhammed in the 7th century.

They did so primarily by force, conquered Spain, and almost conquered the rest of Europe, as well, in the ensuing decades and centuries.
build working relationships and solidarities with Palestinian scholars, artists, and activists consistent with their 2005 call for “a campaign of boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel until it complies with international law and Palestinian rights” (BDSmovement.net).
The main promoter of the BDS movement is Omar Barghouti and he calls specifically for the elimination of Israel as a Jewish state.  This is something akin to calling for the end of France as the State of the French people or calling for the end of Japan as the State of the Japanese people.

Given the history of the Jewish people under Arab-Muslim imperial rule - not to mention European domination and slaughter for so many centuries - what Barghouti wants, and therefore what BDS and its SFSU supporters want, is for the dissolution of the lone, sole Jewish state and, therefore, an end to any physical protection for the Jewish people in the Middle East.

I do not believe that we are going to allow this to happen and if San Francisco State University wishes to support the call for the helplessness of the Jews by organizations like the General Union of Palestine Students (GUPS) then it may, in the future, experience some drop off of Jewish support.
Repeatedly, delegates experienced and witnessed the realities of Israeli apartheid, racial discrimination, ethnic cleansing, and undermining of Palestinian rights.
This is where the Big Lie gets delicious.

Apartheid!  Racial Discrimination!  Ethnic Cleansing!  Palestinian Rights!

This is the kind of language, in the contemporary iteration, that has traditionally lead to the persecution of the Jewish people.  The Nazis also spoke of Jewish depravity and evil-doing toward the "indigenous" population.

In every generation we are told why we deserve a good beating and in this generation the apparent reason is because we are allegedly mean to the Arab majority in the Middle East.

They blow up our children with suicide bombers and then accuse us of "racism" for putting up a fence to prevent them from blowing up our children with suicide bombers.

They get away with this because they are playing the Europeans and the western left like a fiddle.

400 million Arabs and 6 million Jews.

Our odds are one in seventy and, yet, we continue to beat those odds.

Nonetheless, San Francisco State University gives money to an organization that incites hatred and violence toward the harassed and threatened Jewish minority within living memory of the Holocaust.

My father's side of the family was slaughtered by the Nazis in the Ukrainian town of Medzhybizh during Operation Barbarossa in the summer of 1942.  They were forced to road building and once the road was built they were forced to dig trenches.

Once those trenches were dug 3,000 Jews were lined up within those trenches and shot dead by the Einsatzgruppen.

If you care about your kids, when we say "Never Again" we better damn well mean it.

San Francisco State University and Calls for Murder

Michael L.

{Cross-posted at Jews Down Under and the Times of Israel.}

colonizers1.jpg - upload images with Picamatic San Francisco State University is funding political student organizations that call for murder.

As has been well-covered in the Jewish American press, SFSU's General Union of Palestine Students (GUPS) held up signs last year at an event honoring deceased Palestinian-Arab professor, Edward Said, reading, "My heroes have always killed colonizers."  CBS News in the United States also ran a story concerning the violent threats of GUPS president Muhammad Hammad toward Israelis Jews and Jews, more generally.

Edward Said, it should be noted, was photographed throwing rocks at Jews just across the border from Israel, which is what one might generally expect from Columbia University professors who allegedly specialized in literary studies, but who really specialized in demonizing Israel.  I assume that they were meant as "symbolic" rocks, but I feel reasonably certain that for the young Jews who they were thrown at they felt real enough.

The SFSU event included nothing less than a call for murder from university funded organizations and it is more than reasonable for alumnus, such as myself, or the parents of students at SFSU, to wonder just who it is that these SFSU students think should be killed?

The individual in the photograph above, it must be noted, is not Mr. Hammad, the recently former president of the organization.  He is just one SFSU student in favor of killing "colonizers."

But SFSU funds GUPS and GUPS calls for murder.

We know this not just from the signs they held up calling for the blood of "colonizers," by whom they mean Jews, but from the fact that the president of GUPS, Muhammad Hammad, has made news internationally with his public and grandstanding enthusiasm for the murder of Jewish supporters of the Jewish people and the State of Israel.

This, it should be noted, represents the process of mainstreaming hatred toward the Jewish people in the west as it is playing out today and as it is playing out at San Francisco State University.  The great irony, of course, is that the mainstreaming of hatred toward Jews, and the encouragement of violence toward Jews, is now coming from the racist "anti-racist" left in places like SF State.

Arabs have chased Jews out of the Middle East almost entirely, with the obvious exception of Israel, and are currently chasing Christians out, as well.  Meanwhile, the tiny Jewish minority is departing Europe because as Arab-Muslim immigration into that part of the world increases, the emigration of Jews out of Europe toward the United States or Canada or Australia or Israel does so, as well. The reason for this is because theocratically-based anti-Jewish racism is rife within the larger Arab-Muslim community. In the Arab Middle East violent hatred toward Jews is widespread, toxic, and serves political functions. In Europe it is gaining steam and forcing Jews to move off the continent. In North America, Jews and Muslims probably get along better than anywhere else on the planet, but the signs are now emerging that tolerance for Jews in America is beginning to erode.

And that is the true significance of the SFSU story.

Just as the Jewish minority was driven from over 99 percent of the Middle East, and just as the Jewish remnant is driven from Europe within living memory of the Holocaust, now American Jews are beginning to see a potential taste of things to come.

The threats against the international Jewish population - in the form of anti-Semitism, anti-Zionism, and the related movement to boycott, divest from, and sanction (BDS) the Jewish state, if not the Jewish people - throughout the west is primarily coming out of left-leaning venues, including various prominent newspapers and blogs, such as the Huffington Post, and the UK Guardian, and Daily Kos, in the United States, but also from left-leaning universities such as San Francisco State University, where I earned a Master's Degree in American History in 2001, if not the greater Cal State and UCAL systems, in general.

What is needed when hate-filled racist individuals, like Muhammad Hammad, or hate-filled racist organizations like GUPS, call for blood is a greater degree of transparency in the methods of the larger organizations involved. San Francisco State University is only one, and it has an obligation to protect the privacy of its student body, including heinous individuals like Mr. Hammad.  Nonetheless, public institutions, like major public universities, also have an obligation to their alums, to the parents of their students, to their donors, and to the general community who they serve.

What we need to know now is just what action SFSU took given the fact that GUPS not only called for the murder of "colonizers," whomever those people may be, but that the president of GUPS held up a knife before the camera and called for the murder of Jews.

President Wong and the SFSU administration do not owe the Jewish people, or the people of northern California, every detail in their behavior concerning the recent calls for violence emanating from my former campus, but they do, as a matter of general human decency, if not law, owe us some insight into just what they did about the fact that they are funding a student organization that calls for the murder of "colonizers," by whom they mean Jews.

Not only did they fund the General Union of Palestine Students in the past, but they are likely going to do so in the future.

In other words, San Francisco State University is quite literally funding a student organization that is calling for the murder of the Jewish supporters of Israel, which represents the great majority of the Jewish people.

What we know, due to the diligence of Tammi Rossman-Benjamin at the AMCHA Initiative, is that the president, or former president, of GUPS, Muhammad Hammad, was even more violently inclined than we learned last year. The shear number and descriptions of violent postings by this individual is shocking. This is a young Arab man who publicly yearns for violence against Jewish supporters of Israel, as well as people, including children, that he doesn't like for any reason whatsoever.

What we also know from Ellen Griffin, Associate Vice President of University Communications, is that Muhammad Hammad is no longer a student at San Francisco State.

{Well, thank goodness for small favors, as my dear old ma used to say.}

But, what we do not know, and what we should know, is just what the office of the president of the university did about this situation?

SFSU president Dr. Wong put out a note last year in which he told us that he opposes calls for political violence among his more radical students.

I do not know how much comfort that should give to any young Jewish woman, or Israeli Jewish woman, on that campus.

But, given the fact that a genocidal organization like GUPS still receives university funding, it is cold comfort, indeed.

So long as racist and violently-inclined organizations like the General Union of Palestine Students continue to receive university funding then liberals and pro-Jewish people and non-racists should question and discus support for San Francisco State University.

SFSU cannot expect the friendship of the Jewish community as it funds incitements to violence toward Jews.

That much should be obvious.
