On teaching Mizrahi history

At Israel Hayom, Edy Cohen has an article about the need to include the Farhud and other aspects of Mizrahi history in Israel's curriculum. Cohen is right that it is long overdue to teach about the history of the Mizrahim and appalling that European Jewish history is treated as though it is synonymous with Jewish history and that the half of Israel's Jewish population from the Middle East deserves to have its history taught. However, Cohen misses another reason why it is critical to teach Mizrahi history.
One of the memes that our enemies spread is that even if we have an ancient history in the Levant and even if we built a state there recently producing so much of value to the world, in between we have abandoned and forgotten that region. Further, they acknowledge the horrible things that Europe has done to its Jews, with the Holocaust merely being the worst of a long chain of atrocities, but turn around and complain that the "innocent" Palestinians are paying the price to expiate Europe's guilt. This meme is critical for their claim that we "stole" the land from the Palestinians because if the Jews both have an ancient history on the land and maintained a continuous connection to the land between that ancient history and modern times, then there would be no pretense under which to say that the Arabs were anything other than an imperial power over the centuries.
In addition to demonstrating the continuity of Jewry's connection to the southwest Levant, Mizrahi history would also convey a different explanation for the persistence of Arab rejectionism of the State of Israel. The popular view is that Arab rejectionism is just bluster obscuring the "fact" that they only want to provide to the Palestinians what is their due and that this bluster would disappear once the Palestinians do receive their "due." However, an alternate view would be that the Arabs are irredentist for the social order that existed prior to the emergence of Zionism. Mizrahi history provides the details of the social order for which they are irredentist.

Our friend, Kate, often keeps me updated with news stories of interest that I might not otherwise have come across. This morning she sends me a link to a piece entitled, Anti Semitism in Venezuela: it is planned, published in Venezuela News And Views: A blog about surviving the Chavez and heirs neo-dictatorship.
The piece below was originally published in 2006, so it is an older piece, but it was recently translated and, despite its age, it demonstrates that old-timey anti-Semitism is still around outside of Arab-Muslim societies.
Throughout the Middle East Arab-Muslim anti-Semitism is of the pure variety. They tend to absolutely loathe Jews and tell one another that we are the children of apes and pigs and that we use the delicious blood of non-Jewish children in the preparation of matzoh.

Now, Latin America represents fresh ground and I am fascinated to discover that as late as 2006 newspapers in that part still published this sort of genocidally hair-raising material.

and auto-genocides.
Israelis are lying when they say they are the favored people of God;
on the contrary, because they are always at war and without their own
land, it seems that they are marked for having destroyed Jesus Christ.
We should reform the Bible which falsely refers to them as the chosen
race by God, and we will act to stop them from manipulating the Jewish
community. The United States is trapped by Zionists who control their
economy and many critical positions in their government; and we must
avoid that this critical situation takes place in Venezuela before
they also ruin us, because they can possess any nationality, but first
they act as Jews in whatever land they plant themselves. Israel
couldn't resist that despite possessing Jerusalem as the capital of
the Christian world, Lebanon continued to have more international
tourism, and now, due to international repulsion, Israel will have
even less [tourism].
Let's pay attention of the Israeli-Zionist associations, unions and
federations which are conspiring to Venezuela to take over our
finances, our industries, commerce, construction; which are
infiltrating government positions and politics. Possibly, we'll have
to expel them from the country, as other nations have done, which is
the reason that Jews remain in a continuous state of stateless exodus,
and it is why in 1948 they invaded Palestine, guided by Albion. Will
global justice allow the United States, England, and Israel to destroy
the Middle East to take over its oil? Only the union of its people
will save them.
The only way that humanity will reconcile with the Jews is if these
renounce their Zionist leadership, which aspires to dominate the
world, and if they stop presenting themselves as the Chosen people of
God, and when they do so, we will hug them fraternally as equal human
beings.

7 Common Objectives

Recent polls show that over 70% of Americans support Israel. Yet, there are a few Americans who state that America and Israel share few objectives. I describe below seven important, common objectives, that if achieved, will significantly benefit both America and Israel.
1. Completely eliminate Iran's nuclear and missile development program.
We have to take Iran's statements, “Death to America”, “Death to Israel”, very seriously. They actively support several Jihadist organizations. Their Shiite tradition, which I respect, states that the twelfth Imam, will return (Kingdom of God) after a giant conflagration. Mutually Assured Destruction is not a deterrent to them, it is an inducement.
2. Convince the Jewish “Fat Cats” to immediately stop supporting the Democratic Party.
With 23% being the highest portion of Democrats that support Israel, it is time to re- evaluate the party of Roosevelt, Kennedy and Johnson.
3. Actively and constructively criticize President Obama's anti Israel actions and proclamations.
Is President Obama anti -Semitic? I don't know. But, I do know that his actions and pronouncements aid and abet those anti Semites around the world. The Holocaust is the primary reason he gives for Israel's legitimacy. It was a catalyst enabling Jews to reclaim the land of Israel. His mistreatment of Israel's leaders, his coddling of anti Semites like Erdogan and the Muslim Brotherhood strongly suggest little affinity for Jews. Recall, he was a member of Reverend Wright's flock for over twenty one years!
4. Nominate a Democratic Party candidate for President in 2016 that is, sincerely and vocally, supportive of Israel.
It may be very difficult to find such a candidate. The party contains a plurality of far left, anti establishment , anti Israel, anti free enterprise voters. The Democrats, under President Obama, have replaced the ambition to become wealthy with the politics of envy.
5. Prevent the “court” Jews (M. Hoenlein, Abraham Foxman, et. al.) from representing Jews in America.
It is tiresome to have both Democrats and Republican administrations ask the “court” Jews to circulate at White House gatherings. It was particularly insulting two years ago, when President Obama could not be in Washington for Hanukkah. He scheduled a Hanukkah celebration two weeks earlier. I don't believe that is permissible in Jewish law. Nevertheless, he lit the candles with the proper number of skull capped attendees.
I ask, would he have changed the date for the Christmas dinner, or the Iftar Ramadan ending meal?
These “court” Jews and their respective organizations have failed to increase support for Israel around the world. They have failed to reverse the trend of increasing global anti Semitism.
6. Get the U.S. Government to actively support the non -adversarial nations of the Middle East. (Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, etc.)
Egypt is the primary Muslim country fighting Islamist terrorist groups. Yet, the present administration delayed giving Egypt their allotted military aid for over 18 months. President Obama insisted on publicly calling for Mubarak to step down but was painfully silent when President Morsi was turning Egypt into an anti West , anti Israel nation. Our sole assistance to Jordan after their pilot was burned alive was to release our drone photographs so Jordan could bomb some of the Jihadist forces.
7. Withdraw the legitimacy of the anti Israel, anti-Semitic, BDS movement in the University of California system.
Hate speech has replaced free speech. The state government of California has to forcefully compel the university administrators to disband the various groups, like Students for Justice in Palestine. This group is not for Palestine as much as they are against Jews, Israelis and free speech. They are for Hamas and Hizballah. It is shameful that Jewish students have to fear for their physical safety in an American University.
