Holding A Wolf By The Ear

Doodad

An interesting idiom; one I had never heard before until I came across it in a novel I was reading recently. It struck me that it described perfectly the situation in which Israel finds itself. One does not have to think very hard to see see just how it does.

I found two reference to this idiom. The first, Auribus teneo lupum, is attributed to the Roman  Emperor Tiberius commenting on the dangers that threatened him on every hand in ruling the Roman Empire. The second was Thomas Jefferson discussing

slavery and the Missouri question/compromise (admitting Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state to keep the balance in Congress between slave and free states). We have the wolf by the ears, and we can neither hold him, nor safely let him go. Justice is in one scale, and self-preservation in the other.

Surely Israel has been holding a wolf by the ear for a long time and to let go, as it eventually must, is fraught with danger.

Now the wolf is a ferocious beast and once you let go it will tear you into pieces. Palestine has been nipping at Israel for a very long time. The solution is to have never have taken hold of that wolf, especially by the ear but I think we know how and why that happened. Nevertheless, it's time to let go.

In my mind, the only way not to get torn to pieces is to kill the wolf before you let go. And I mean this literally. You can't make peace with a wolf. Wolf lovers will call you cruel and insist you got yourself into this mess in the first place and will just have to take your chances or what's coming to you. I say ignore them. Self preservation takes precedent. Kill the wolf soon.

  1. "Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein (Likud) condemned Arab rioters on the Temple Mount, calling on the Israeli government to put an end to Arab efforts to intimidate Jews attempting to visit the Jerusalem holy site.

“This generation will no longer tolerate a situation in which on the Temple Mount, especially the Temple Mount, Muslim rioters can do what they please, and Jews who simply want to visit are threatened.” Edelstein said at a Knesset meeting marking Jerusalem Day, the anniversary of the unification of the capital.

“This is an illogical, immoral, undemocratic and un-Jewish situation. This situation must change.”

Kill the wolf. Ban Arabs from the Temple Mount for a set time in which no riots or terror attacks take place. At the first offense, double the banning time, etc. Kill the wolf.

    1. I was thinking of maybe renting one of those "wide load" trailers and, you know, moving that mosque to another location in Jordan or somewhere else where Mohammad actually slept.
But seriously, Arabs will riot no matter what, so why not just close it down for a while. Let the usual suspects on the international scene whine and scream as if they're concerned and then tell them where to shove it. And make sure to tell them "we were here first."

    2. BTW, to Ken Roth, and all the other messed up jerks out there, rioting is provocative.

    3. If you just 'throw them out' you simply inflame the other Muslim nations. Here's a slightly better solution IMO.

Th main source of violence and intimidation is the Jordanian appointed wakf,a group of Jordanian Islamist imams. they are responsible for the riots and incitement and the attempts to destroy Jewish artifacts in places like Solomon's stables.

      1) Get rid of the Jordanian Wakf. replace them with an Israeli appointed group of moderate imams...and they do exist.

      2) Ban Jews, Muslims and all other groups from the Temple Mount unless they are an approved archeological expedition or a repair unit for needed maintenance. The new Israeli appointed wakfh would NOT reside on the Temple Mount itself and would be consulted on these occasions. There would be no worship on the Temple Mount period.

HaShem will rebuild the final Bais Hamikdosh in His own time (and may it be my time, kirtzono). Until then Jews (let alone Muslims) should NOT be permitted to walk on it, since they have no clue as to what they may be walking on.

Jordan would be upset(which I could care less about) but if an Israeli appointed Wakf was involved on decisions regarding maintenance and neither Jews or Muslims were allowed on the Temple Mount for worship, it would be difficult to accuse Israel of Judaizing the Mount. Although as the Torah tells us, the next Holy Temple will be built by HaShem, not man and will last to eternity.

And meanwhile, a source of violence will be neutralized.

  4. This is profound yet how many times have we heard stories of the complicit, biased press. Time to kill that wolf too. That's why it's important to reecho Trump's fake news meme often and loud to keep the liars, propagandists and operatives on their toes.

"Roll back twenty years. I was a bold, carefree, fearless student at Manchester University in the UK. I decided to spend a summer in Jerusalem getting some work experience. (These were the days when I wanted to be a foreign correspondent.) I approached two major UK news channels and got accepted for internships at both.

I arrived at the first, hungry to learn and quickly volunteered to accompany the reporter to a riot in Ramallah. But what I saw when we arrived surprised me. There was no riot going on. There was a bunch of people hanging about, waiting for the cameras to arrive. When we did (and our flak jackets and helmets were safely in place), only then did they start to throw stones and glass bottles. And as soon as we left, the ‘rioters’ left too.

I asked the reporter if that often happened, and he confirmed that, yes, that was generally the way it worked. So the foreign media unwittingly became a partner in stone and bottle throwing riots against Israel. If the cameras hadn’t arrived, arguably the riot I witnessed might never have happened.

I remember a conversation with the reporter on the way back. I asked him why many people perceived his news channel to be biased against Israel. He replied that the British people like to support the underdog. That’s why, until 1967, people admired this plucky, young state. However, post-Six Day War, the tides began to turn, and the Palestinians began to be viewed as the underdog."

    1. The fake news syndrome started and became perfected with Israel and the poor Palestinians. Pallywood. Matti Friedman's article several years ago. Nothing has changed, but now it has spread exponentially. The imbalance in the media is harmful. At least there is now a backlash. Some are starting to see they were duped, others are too deep inside their bubble or can't overcome the hate and bitterness at life they project. Oh well, we'll see what happens. It's so much easier to take the low road, that's for sure.

He predicted that “total withdrawal” would

  7. "The cult of the Palestinians fits the delusional self-image of “the resistance,” for whom tweeting disapproval of Donald Trump is like ambushing the Wehrmacht in the bocage of Normandy, and sporting an edgy bumper sticker on a Prius is like driving around the suburbs of Baghdad with a machine gun mounted on a flatbed. While not all anti-Zionists are anti-Semitic, all anti-Semites are anti-Zionist. You can see why. Nothing leavens the political grind of anti-Zionism like the metaphysical grains of anti-Semitism. And if you dislike Jews, you’ll hate the State of Israel. Spend any time online, and it’s obvious that anti-Zionism is a gateway drug to the hard stuff."

Gateway drug indeed. Just look at the Labour party in the UK. Almost everyday you read about one of its members, often high placed members, is out ed for anti-semitism/liking retweeting posting some online garbage. Almost EVERY DAY! Things are a little slower in the US but give it time and more radical leftist Democrat congresscritters. members. It's in the blood.

I support Trump's call to brand the Democratic Party as the party of anti-semitism not because I like Trump but because it's true. Faced with chances to rein it in/purge it, leaders failed to do so out of fear. That sucks.

  8. The Jewish holiday of Shavout is coming soon,
so you might appreciate these two quick quotes:

    ===================================

Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan (born 1934 CE, died 1983 CE):

    Only Judaism began when MILLIONS
of people heard G*D speak at Mount Sinai.

All other faiths began when ONE MAN
claimed a revelation and gradually gained followers.

SOURCE: This quote is condensed from:
The Handbook of Jewish Thought (volume 1 of 2,
    chapter 4, paragraphs 40 to 41, pages 52 to 53)
by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, 1979 CE, Moznaim Publishing,

    ===================================

The Jew by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan:

Other faiths begin with a single individual who claims
to have a special message and gradually gathers a following.

His followers then spread the word and gather converts,
until a new religion is born.
Virtually every major world religion follows this pattern.

The only exception to this is Judaism.

Here G*D gathered an entire people, some
three million strong, to the foot of Mount Sinai
    and proclaimed His message.

Every man, woman and child heard G*D’s voice,
proclaiming the Ten Commandments, and thus
a bond was forged between G*D and Israel.

This was an event unique in the history of mankind.

"Donald Trump has obstructed justice in ways which I will not go into right now."
"Donald Trump has mutilated our Constitution in ways I will not go into right now."
"Donald Trump is working for Putin and Russia in ways I will not go into right now."
"Barack Obama was a true friend to Israel in ways I will not go into right now."

    Democrats being honest:
"I supported moving the American Embassy to Jerusalem until Trump actually did it."
"I was against illegal immigration until Trump was."
