20 Jews Live in Indonesia!

Mike L.

20 whole Jews in the entire country.

Now, isn't that something?  In a country of about 250 million people, there are 20 Jews who walk among them... and I very much hope that they are kvetching as they do so.

The snippet below was written by JTA and Times of Israel staff.
Just 20 Jews remain in the world’s largest Muslim nation, and it’s not clear who demolished their last house of worship, Java’s Beith Shalom

Indonesia’s last synagogue has been destroyed, a Dutch news site reported.

Unidentified persons demolished the Beith Shalom synagogue in Surabaya on the island of Java to its foundations sometime earlier this year, according to a report on
The synagogue has seen a number of anti-Israel protests staged in front of it and was sealed by Islamic hardliners sealed in 2009, according to the Jakarta Globe.

Reports suggesting the synagogue’s destruction have appeared in Indonesian media since May but were confirmed last week by the, which quoted the director of the Surabaya Heritage Society as saying that he intended to protest the demolition in talks with government officials.
20 Jews and one demolished synagogue.

I think that if the Indonesian Jews can get together with the Yemeni Jews they could maybe create a bowling team.

  1. Probably Israel's fault; or AIPAC; or Apartheid, etc etc etc.

    1. Clearly, Doodad. These human rights activists are merely expressing peaceful opposition to Israeli policy...

    2. My understanding is that the 20 of 'em were running Indonesia's government and media, so this was just righteous backlash.

      But, honestly, 20?

20 Jews in that entire country?

It puts me to mind of the one, lone, sole Jew who was living in Afghanistan, if you guys remember that story.

He even lived in an abandoned synagogue.

      Can you imagine?

    3. And if the usual pattern prevails, antisemitism in Indonesia will probably INCREASE once there are zero Jews left...

  2. Hell, 20 Jews could control more than just Indonesia, what with their connections and the mind kontrol machine. Just sayin'

  3. BTW, I'm trying to decide whether to trade in my Che t-shirt for a Putin t-shirt or a Rouhani t-shirt. Whatta you cool cats suggest?

    1. A Rouhani bobble-head doll!

      {I want one!}

    2. Probably Chabad.

A friend of mine is in Vietnam and he had meals at a couple of Chabad houses there.

    3. Chasidim in Vietnam?

      Who knew?
