  1. It's good to be home again. There's just nothing better than being in a Kensington corner bar, having a PBC Walt Wit (pronounced "wall wi'" in our local dialect), while the jukebox goes from Raekwon to Johnny Cash.

Only in the River Wards... ;)

  2. How's that for a trick play! My Temple Owls have their field goal blocked, and then give up yet another touchdown a few plays later.

Down 24-0, halftime. We've got 'em right where we want 'em! ;)

(this season is really starting to suck...)

    1. (what a year for Philadelphia sports... the Flyers are our only hope!)

The Sixers are gonna lose 66 games this year, on purpose, but i love that strategy. We're also gonna win two or three titles over the next ten years as a result of massive cap space, multiple high draft picks during great classes, management that finally knows what its doing, and of course having free agent attraction in the form of being one of America's greatest cities!

If only I could fast-forward to 2016, when all of our teams will be contenders again!

  3. The question that I am asking myself on this fine Saturday morning is:

    compost or fertilizer?

    My raised beds need help!

    1. I think this is an issue I'll have to investigate personally. Please send round-trip Amtrak sleeper car tickets my way... ;)

Nah, I don't have vacation days until next summer, actually, but at least I get two weeks right from the start!

What's the specific problem youze are having? It certainly can't be the weather in the city with the greatest weather in the US?

    2. We've got two raised beds in the back and, so, for the first time ever we're trying our hand at gardening. We've had some success with spinach and tomatoes, but got nowhere with eggplant or melons.

The problem is that the soil is desiccated and and clay-like, so we need to enrich it. We started a compost bin some months ago, but we still don't have enough.

From what I've read compost is probably the way to go, but I'm looking into the matter. Maybe a combination of 80 percent compost and 20 percent fertilizer.

    3. Backyard hens are a great source for fertilizer, and of course eggs!

      I don't know Oakland's laws offhand, but I'm guessing they're chicken-friendly.

Let me consult a friend (my own gardening efforts have always been failures, but I'm gonna get really serious about it next year!), and get back to you soon.

Eggplant, specifically, tends to take some time to succeed, if I recall. Greens and squash kick ass right from the start, but you've gotta be careful with the latter, as they crossbreed easily, and sometimes produce inedible fruit which chokes out other stuff...

I'm about to eat and drink very well. Just wish it was a bit cooler!
