TACLOBAN, Philippines - One of the most powerful storms ever recorded killed at least 10,000 people in the central Philippines province of Leyte, a senior police official said on Sunday, with coastal towns and the regional capital devastated by huge waves.Israel was first on the ground in Haiti, after the 2010 earthquake there, in order to bring medical aid and general assistance to a poverty-stricken and beleaguered population. Given the devastation that has just taken place in the Philippines, I very much hope to see a repeat performance by the Israelis.
Super typhoon Haiyan destroyed about 70 to 80 percent of the area in its path as it tore through the province on Friday, said chief superintendent Elmer Soria, a regional police director.
It should be remembered, of course, that after the 2010 action in Haiti which saved countless Haitian lives, the Israelis were accused of stealing Haitian internal organs for sale on the black market or for using the Haitian tragedy as a way of deflecting international concern over its treatment of local Arabs.
Nonetheless, Israel cannot worry about what the malicious will say and should do whatever it can do to help the suffering people of the Philippines.
