The Death of the Progressive-Left

Mike L.

{Originally published at the Times of Israel.}
LAHORE: A highly-charged mob of thousands burnt more than 40 Christian houses in Badami Bagh area of Lahore on Saturday to “take revenge of the blasphemy” allegedly committed by a Christian two days earlier.
Express News had earlier reported that around 100 houses were burnt by the mob.

Eyewitnesses said that the mob broke into the houses, looted them and burnt the remaining belongings on the roads…

On Friday, a mob of almost 3,000 people forced the Christian community to flee for their lives, leaving behind their houses and possessions unprotected.

The charged group had gathered around Joseph Colony on Noor Road, led by Shafiq Ahmed, who was in search of the accused Savan, alias Bubby. The mob then attacked Savan’s house, setting it on fire and pelting it with stones. Other houses in the locality – home to about 150 Christian families – were also attacked. Many residents, including women and children, hastily fled to save themselves.
If “peace activists” or those concerned with “social justice” or “universal human rights” actually cared about any of those things they would object to this atrocity, but they do not object.

One of the themes of Israel Thrives is that the progressive-left as a movement has betrayed its own values due to an unspoken, unacknowledged tension between the ideal of multiculturalism and the ideal of universal human rights. Since, over the course of many years, the multicultural ideal has essentially won this conflict, it means that universal human rights is simply no longer on the progressive-left agenda, but what is social justice without universal human rights?

Universal human rights is at the core of what the progressive movement allegedly stands for. If they do not stand for that then they do not stand for anything. And the truth of the matter is that they do not stand for anything. I have lost all respect for both feminism and the peace movement because both of these movements have betrayed their own values by abandoning women, Gay people, and Jews to the most horrendous form of violent bigotry imaginable throughout the Muslim Middle East.

Because they are absolutely terrified of being accused of “Islamophobia” they turn a blind eye to the rise of Islamic fascism and therefore refuse to stand up for the victims of it. What I find most offensive, however, is the fact that so many “progressive Zionists” cannot bring themselves to stand up for the Jews in the Middle East by pointing out that they are subject to an intense campaign of vilification that often leads to violence coming out of political Islam.

One cannot be “pro-Israel” or “pro-Jewish” and yet turn a blind eye to Islamic fascism in that part of the world. To be “pro-Jewish” and yet ignore widespread Arab-Muslim genocidal hatred toward Jews would be something akin to African-American civil rights activists pretending that slavery never happened or that Jim Crow should not have been denounced because to do so would be racist toward white people.

Ultimately, of course, the reason that the progressive movement refuses to stand up to political Islam is because the progressive-left is the foremost racist political movement in the west today outside of political Islam, itself. They claim to be “anti-racist” but they are not “anti-racist.” Whether they recognize it or not they are, in fact, the very epitome of racism because they treat Arab-Muslim peoples in the Middle East as if they are small children who must be indulged in even their very worst behavior.

Something between 40 and 100 Christian houses were burned by a crazed mob in Lahore, Pakistan because some Christian allegedly blasphemed against Islam and yet the progressive-left has no problem with this whatsoever. Or, if they do have a problem with it, they simply cannot bring themselves to stand up to this kind of terrible injustice because they consider doing so to be racist in itself.

And thus the progressive-left as a political movement is dead.

I come out of the progressive movement and for many years was a liberal Democrat, but when I look back at the movement all I see is a desolate landscape like something out of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. In the unspoken and unacknowledged tension between multiculturalism and universal human rights, the former has strangled the latter, killing whatever meaning that there may have been to the movement that fought against slavery, that championed the unions and economic justice, and that stood up for women and Gay people and ethnic minorities and for the planet, itself.

They allowed their own racism to drain the life out of their movement… out of our movement.

It’s really very sad.

  1. The Progressive left approved of Lenin and Stalin, even after the horrors of Stalin were well known. The recently burning in hell Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm once, when asked if '15 or 20 million dead were worth it to form a good enough Marxist socialist society?' his response was "Yes I think so." This is what lies at the core of progressivism. It's not feel-goodism and hand wringing. It's the love for the Titanic Leader who is bigger than history. It is fawning appreciation that while perhaps dictators and fascists occasionally murder a few million too many people, they sure do know how to bang home ideological purity at any cost.

Progressivism and it's close cousin, Populism, always, ALWAYS end in fascist brutality. Always. They are the politics of the angry mob. Populism uses that anger and fear directly, while Progressivism uses a 'higher purpose' as its pathway to totalitarian control.

This is what lies at the core of leftist antisemitism, since that really is what progressive antizionism really is. Leftist antisemitism is the ur-hatred of all leftists because it flies in the face of internationalism and transnationalism that leftism purports to embrace. And guess what, deeper than any inconvenience they might feel about Psychotic Islamic Medievalism and how it plans to treat most of the leftists given the chance, they find in them a shared love of the same kind internationalism at all costs. Hell, the higher the costs the better. Make the World Marxist (or Communist or Stalinist) or Chomskyist or whatnot? It's little different from Make the World the One Ummah. Lefists and hyper reactionary Islam share one thing, they do not believe in nations or states or the values or shared beliefs or peoples which hold them together. They belief in an overarching (they claim a benign) tyranny brought about by a global revolution or a global jihad, neither of which is all that materially different from one another. And just like Muslims are perfectly willing, and history bears this out, to murder uncounted millions of Muslims in their quests for perfection, the progressives are perfectly willing and were perfectly willing to stand by and watch the purges, the famines, the massacres, the genocides.

Jews are fly in the ointment for them. They simply will never accept that we want to be Jews, a Jewish people, a Jewish nation in a Jewish state. Not part of some vague international metropolitan world community of like minded like thinking drones spouting rational well wishing liberal pieties.

It's not that there's 15 million of us in the world or that Israel is where it is today and has such and such borders. It's that we refuse to subsume. We always have and god willing always will.

All those tools all that blather, about racism about Darfur about illegal aliens and LGBT Judaism and 40 other things au courrant things. Those are secondary. Those are simply the tools of choice for a movement that appeals to the 'higher purpose' of atheists, as opposed to the higher calling of religious Muslims, which is really the same thing. "It's nice to be nice, it's good to be good...."

Yeah, so? It's actually a commandment and you don't get a prize for that. Today in Sunday school the older children were given t-shirts for bundling up packages for the troops. They were told they could not wear them in class and if they ever did they'd have to turn them inside out. Because doing right doesn't get you a prize. Being liberal and well wishing and being kind to the misfortunate isn't actually a belief system. It's not noble or good or kind. It's your damn obligation - so stop telling us that feeling and believing gives you the moral high ground about anything, least of all about 7 million beseiged Jews fending off the maniacs you 'feel sorry' for.

Ok I'm done now, I didn't edit this or reread it and banged it out in 10 minutes. I hope it makes sense.

    1. What you say makes a lot of sense. I don't think that all Progressives are this way, and most in my experience have not actually thought about these issues and the way things can develop, except on a very superficial level. Many activists are as you describe, however, and the tendency toward totalitarianism for the so-called "better" good certainly is something to be aware of.

    2. Great comment, Trudy.

And, oldschooltwentysix, I agree with what you wrote.

    3. However, just to clarify:

      I'm not theist.

And "the higher calling" of Islam -- "the higher calling" of orthodox authoritative Islam -- is not "It's nice to be nice, it's good to be good....".
